three things thursday

1. I finished the entire first season of Downton Abbey in a record two days. I was so sad for Mary at the very end… and Edith definitely got what she deserved. Stupid Matthew– no need to be so dramatic. I LOVE Anna and Mr. Bates, and I wish I had a Carson in my life. Lastly, Thomas and O’Brien are the worst. I wish Thomas would go stuff himself into a canon. I’m now working on season two, and even though I know how it ends, I can’t believe Matthew is engaged to that twit. She has no personality… who would ever pick her over Mary?? And Sir Richard is such a creeper.

Also, if you’re in love with Downton like I am, head on over to Cely’s blog for her “Mean Girls of Downton Abbey” posts… here and here.

Hilarious, right?! LOVE.

2. I read a whole book on Monday: I bought it at 5:45, and finished it by 10:30. It was awesome. The book is How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm (and Other Adventures in Parenting)… it’s about how parents from around the world handle parenting challenges. For example, in Buenos Aires parents have no problem bringing their kids out with them when they have dinner at 9 or 10 pm, since their children don’t end up sleeping less, just on a different schedule (than American kids). And French parents don’t have to force their kids to eat vegetables, since they engage their kids in the planting, harvesting, and cooking of their food. Mainly, my take-away from the book is that most people across the world seem to have fewer hangups about how they raise their kids, and somehow, their kids turn out just fine.

I hope to someday care less about what I “should” be doing, and care more about my instincts. I think the internet makes that nearly impossible, especially for a parent or soon-to-be parent, but getting caught up in all the “shoulds” doesn’t help you enjoy your kids… it just makes you feel guilty and inadequate all. the. time.

I’ve said before that I can’t wait to have little ones… some days I feel more prepared than others, but honestly, I hope that I can refrain from reading a bunch of books about what I “should” be doing. I don’t want to feel defeated long before I have a baby in my arms.

3. The last couple of Parks and Rec episodes have been phenomenal. Ron’s anger over Tom’s bowling, and Louis C.K.’s perennial awkwardness just makes the show. I can’t wait to see how the Tom and Ann thing plays out– I really hope they don’t throw it out.

You’re welcome, guys.
